Menstrual cramps and fluid retention
• To relieve the pain and discomfort of menstrual cramps, use repeated hot compresses of marjoram and clary sage over the abdomen. As you lie back and rest, drink a cup of chamomile tea. A warm aromatic bath with lavender and rose absolute soothes and comforts before and during menstruation.
• Fluid retention produces a general bloated feeling and may include specific symptoms of tender breasts and a swollen abdomen. To ease fluid retention take warm aromatic baths with the following mixture: 3 drops each of lavender and clary sage mixed into a little evening primrose oil. You can also mix 2 drops each of lavender, roman chamomile and clary sage into 5 ml (1 tsp) each of evening primrose oil and jojoba oil, and gently massage your abdomen in a clockwise direction.
• To help prevent fluid retention and other menstrual problems, visit an aromatherapist for a course of lymphatic drainage massage. Then try to have a monthly lymphatic drainage massage a few days before your period is due.
